Leiden will be European City of Science 2022. Here is our latest news in the run-up to this incredible year, full of science, knowledge, arts and expertise. We would like to share the ideas of three inspiring and very diverse partners and show you our latest Playbook.

Things to read and watch

On 4 February, we presented our plans via a live stream. Missed it? No worries: you can watch it here.
Our creative mind Lucien Geelhoed finished our second Playbook that sets out our programme and ‘playground’. This is the link to the Dutch version, the English one will follow soon: www.leiden2022.nl/playbook2

Proact, our first European business partner

We proudly present our first European business partner, Proact, a full-service IT company. Proact is a European player in infrastructure, workspace and outsourcing. We are delighted to cooperate with Proact as we seek connections with European partners who are innovative and people-oriented, strive for integrity and excellence, are flexible and have a strong ‘drive for improvement’.

Mark van Liempt, CEO Benelux Proact explains: “We are proud to be the first European partner of Leiden European City of Science 2022. For us, people are key, just as they are for Leiden2022. Our own knowledge and skills in the field of IT & Innovation, combined with the fact that many of our customers are active in the world of science and education, were decisive for a partnership with this great initiative!”

Co-creating Leiden2022

Leiden2022 is a stage for both science and arts. Therefore, we closely cooperate with Cultuurfonds Leiden (Culture Fund Leiden or CFL). CFL supports new art projects and initiatives. “We help artists and organisers to build bridges”, says Guido Marchena, director of CFL. “Leiden2022 is the ideal place for arts and sciences to come together and CFL is focusing many of its resources on this unique moment."

"We hope to set the cultural stage not just for 2022 but for many years to come. Also, to let arts and sciences find a broader audience besides their own peers and patrons.” In 2022, CFL and Leiden2022 will join forces to spark curiosity and showcase Leiden as a remarkable City of Discoveries. If this sparks your creativity, do not hesitate and contact Guido Marchena at guido@cultuurfondsleiden.nl.

Big Questions at Rijksmuseum Boerhaave

Leiden2022 collaborates with Leiden’s museums, like the Rijksmuseum Boerhaave. Its exhibit Big Questions opens in June 2022 as part of Leiden European City of Science 2022 and focuses on the interface between science and society. It will shed light on major challenges related to our universe, climate change, the disastrous effects of the pandemic, health and the manipulation of life.

“We focus on the personal stories of scientists behind recent discoveries and inventions within the frame of people, planet & cosmos”, says Annelore Scholten, vice-director and manager of public engagement and exhibitions. “We also encourage people to form their own opinions on these pressing current and future issues.”

Rijksmuseum Boerhaave actively participates in our ‘Knowledge throughout the Districts’ programme (in Dutch: Kennis door de Wijken) by creating debates and encounters that invite and encourage local citizens to reflect on the key issues addressed in the exhibit. Find out more here.

About us

The city of Leiden will be European City of Science 2022, offering a 365-day programme for everyone with a curious mind. Together with numerous partners, we aim to develop a challenging programme that connects science with society. Anyone can take part, from leading international scientists to curious kids.
We want to raise the profile of science, knowledge, arts and expertise through local action with international appeal on a national stage. At the base of our organisation are our founding partners: LUMC, Leiden University, Municipality of Leiden and the University of Applied Sciences Leiden.
