Euroscience Open Forum at Leiden 2022

We are honoured and excited that the 10th edition of the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) will take place at Leiden 2022. ESOF is Europe’s largest and most prominent conference for interdisciplinary research.

“Working with Leiden as European City of Science and preparing for the 10th edition of ESOF is a wonderful opportunity for us at EuroScience. We look forward to a great year and a very successful event,” says Professor Michael Matlosz, President of EuroScience.
“The multifaceted theme “Who knows” chosen by Leiden for the European City of Science 2022 and the city’s energetic focus on engagement and public involvement are at the heart of our mission at EuroScience and our goal for the flagship ESOF conference in 2022. Together with the two ESOF Champions, Professor Ferry Breedveld and Professor Corinne Hofman, we will create an interesting programme for ESOF that not only presents cutting-edge scientific research but also inspires rich dialogue among scientists and the public and sparks curiosity on all sides.”

Co-creating our programme

We are always looking for new partners and opportunities to enrich our 365 day programme. For example, together with Erfgoed Leiden en Omstreken, we are already exploring where our ideas for Leiden 2022 meet.

Erfgoed Leiden en Omstreken safeguards heritage for eternity by managing and making collections accessible to everyone.

It aims to show people the value of buildings, archaeology, archives and stories, because in a densely populated country, heritage is vulnerable. Erfgoed Leiden activates people to discover, experience and find inspiration in their history.

According to its director, Ariela Netiv: “Leiden European City of Science is a great opportunity to share the scientific knowledge of our scientists with everyone, and to invite the public to use heritage for their own purposes and add their views of the past to our stories. We look forward to our first event in January 2022!”

Leiden2022: A stage for humanities

Rob Zwijnenberg, Professor emeritus Art and Science Interactions, sees the enormous opportunities that Leiden 2022 offers humanities scholars to bring their work to the attention of the public. Zwijnenberg is also chairman of the steering committee which is coordinating the faculty's contributions for Leiden2022. In this interview, he explains how science and society intertwine and calls on everyone to start thinking about interesting initiatives.

Where to find us?

Well, we have just received the keys to our new office! As soon as we are allowed to work out of home, you will find us at the Haagweg 4. For us, this is the ultimate location for organising Leiden 2022, in the midst of artists and other creatives. This former craft school at the heart of Leiden was built in 1892 and is now a municipal monument. Pop in for a coffee when the restrictions are lifted!

We made a timelapse of how our 'programme wall' was made. Watch it here or click on the picture above.
