European City of Science title passed on to Leiden

In Italy the prestigious title of European City of Science was officially handed over to the city of Leiden. Henri Lenferink, mayor of Leiden, received the title from Roberto Dipiazza, mayor of Trieste, in the presence of Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte. During the past week, the Italian port and city of knowledge formed the backdrop to the international EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF), Europe’s largest interdisciplinary science conference. The next ESOF conference will be held in Leiden in 2022, spearheaded by champions Corinne Hofman (Professor of Caribbean Archaeology at Leiden University) and Ferry Breedveld (former Chair of the Executive Board of LUMC). The handover of the title of ‘European City of Science’ for the year 2022 to Leiden was accompanied by a beautiful film capturing Leiden as a city of knowledge. Watch the film here.

The road to 2022

The Leiden European City of Science Foundation was established in March of this year. A Supervisory Board was also appointed, consisting of Henri Lenferink (mayor of Leiden), Carel Stolker (rector magnificus of Leiden University), Kim Smit (Executive Board of LUMC) and Joost Scholten (financer, former Vice Chairman of Merrill Lynch Europe). The appointment of Meta Knol as Director and Lucien Geelhoed as Intendant in July 2020 gave additional momentum to the organisational process. A lot of hard work is being done behind the scenes in collaboration with many partners in the city – from education, culture, science and society – to prepare the programme, which should be ready by the end of 2020. The vision for Leiden 2022 will be announced during a special press conference in October. Keep an eye on our calendar!
Lucien Geelhoed has been appointed Intendant of Leiden European City of Science 2022. In this role, he is responsible for developing the vision and drawing up the programme.

Lucien: “It’s great that Leiden wants to show its European ambition. Thanks to this fantastic title, in 2022 the city will serve as a European stage for the entire Dutch knowledge sector. And we are also committed to ensuring that all residents in the Leiden area can reap the benefits of that. It’s great to have the opportunity to develop a year-long programme, where everyone is welcome and becomes a little wiser every day!
